I began writing "Shake Me" while living in Amsterdam, about a year after Trump was elected, and the song comes from that screaming-into-a-pillow feeling that's become a too-familiar constant collective state over the last few years. It is hard to be mentally healthy in this climate. As we struggle to stay steady, "Shake Me" is a vessel for anger, aimed at mobilizing frustration so that we might better show up for each other and cultivate care every day.

The video for "Shake Me" is a virtual dream state of overwhelming screens and surfaces of self-projection. It reflects an anxiety that often feels like a contagious destabilization of selfhood, under pressure and without outlet. I made it starting with my phone, taking selfies and blowing out faceswapping app functions to essentially haunt myself, swapping my digitally captured face back onto my present-tense face over and over again with varying distortion as a result. I then brought these captures into 3D software to further multiply and surround self with self. This process was inspired by the fact that we're still not awesome at using current digital technologies, especially the social ones, and a lot of that is because the frameworks at hand are built to instigate, amplify, and prey on already anxious mental states of people who really just want to connect and feel like they exist, have a purpose, and are wanted here. In my work, I'm seeking opportunities for joy, curiosity, and sharing in unstable times by playing with these weird tools in ways that we might be able to look at them and ourselves differently--more hopefully and with a sense of deeper connection that prevails.

center of the ocean feeling haunted
kept them all so far away just to feel alright
medicated right
chalked up to survival but my instinct says
we're right to be hysteric,
foaming at the mouth, just wondering why
I would risk waxing quixotic
and tear down all the vestiges they're keeping in our attics
despots feeding fantasy just to keep them addict
rest of us fanatic
loss been pressing on my mind
oh you know it's really been
an impressive run
dreaming of one day I'm gonna decimate
trophies from their escapades and
gush psychosomatic
do-so-mi, answer to me
oh you're so pretty, oh
you know it makes me wanna,
you know it makes me wanna
turn them into stone
break their little bones
turn them into stone
break their little bones
turn them into stone
break their little bones
turn them into stone
shake me.
shake me.
shake me.
shake me.
impressive run, impressions often veil.
impressive run, impressions often veil.
